Improving the performance of the solar PV plant by modules orientation to the east and west and oversizing the inverter

3º lugar

Resumo do projeto

The purpose of this research is to study a possibility to improve the performance of grid-connected PV power plants with fixed solar arrays. PV stations do not always achieve their theoretical peak power for many reasons such as cloudy weather, dust, snow, shadowing and excessive heating. That is why more solar panels are installed to increase the DC/AC ratio and compensate for those losses. A survey conducted among 100 household PV stations owners showed that the average inverter DC/AC ratio is quite low (1.2). It means that the most of the PV stations are not quite oversized and, therefore, can be extended. However, excessive oversizing of PV arrays directed to the south leads to significant energy losses due to clipping. The research analyses an alternative approach: orientation of solar modules to the east and west, and essential oversizing of the inverter. The analysis showed that combined east-west solar power plant with a significant inverter oversizing has a number of advantages compared to traditional PV stations with southern orientation: the generation profile during a day is more even and full, because the eastern and western solar arrays reach the maximum output capacity at different time. This orientation, according to 3-D modeling, allows PV stations’ owners to install more solar panels on the same land plot. Such a station has less clipping losses, works better in cloudy weather and, under modeling, has a higher annual output. The obtained results have been verified on a private PV system. Keywords:Oversizing, solar PV station, inverter, improving the performance, east-west, solar panels, clipping losses.
